How To Prepare for the TEAS Entrance Exam?

The Test of Essential Academic Skills is a common requirement for entrance to nursing school. You will become very familiar with the TEAS exam if you’re one of the 235,000 annual RN program applicants.

Taking an exam can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if your potential career is riding on your results. Keep reading to learn about preparing yourself for the TEAS entrance exam.

Know What to Expect

One of the most challenging parts of any exam preparation is the fear of the unknown. If you know what to expect on your TEAS entrance exam for nurses, you might be able to relax a little.

The exam consists of 170 multiple choice questions throughout four categorized sections. You’ll be tested on your reading, mathematics, science, and English and language usage.

You’ll have three-and-a-half hours total to complete your exam. Each section has its own time limit. For example, you’ll have exactly 64 minutes to complete the reading component of the exam.

Study Smarter

Ditch your laptop during your studying sessions and bring out your trusty old paper and pen. Studies show that writing your notes on paper makes it easier to store information. You’ll not only remember what you’re studying easier, but you’ll understand it better, too.

Use mnemonic devices wherever possible to help you remember important information. Sing a complicated definition to the tune of your favorite song.

Use the first letter of each word in a list to make a new sentence or name. ROY G. BIV is an excellent example of remembering the rainbow colors in order (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).

Put Yourself to the Test

There are several ways you can put your knowledge to the test in the days leading up to your exam.

Create a practice test using your study materials. Give yourself a time limit and see what you’re able to accomplish in that time frame. Resist the urge to peek at your notes while you’re taking the mock exam.

Enlist the help of a family member or friend. Give them your notes and ask them to quiz you.

You can even try taking an online TEAS practice test.

Go Slow

Go slow when you’re writing your exam and as you prepare for it. You should never wait until the last minute to begin your test prep. Not only will that cause unnecessary stress, but it’ll also make you less likely to do well on your exam.

Give yourself plenty of time to study. Read and rewrite your notes as necessary until you have a firm grasp of the concepts.

On exam day, read each question slowly and take your time. It’s not a race, after all.
